Description
Spectacular Premium Gem 1857-S Double Eagle
1857-S $20 MS66 NGC. CAC. Variety 20B, identified by the faint diagonal die scratch from the base of the first T in STATES. Prior to the salvage of the S.S. Central America, the vast majority of 1857-S double eagles were seen in Very Fine to Extremely Fine grades. The shipwreck, however, contained more than 5,000 examples of this issue, many of which were still in mint condition. The present coin was likely recovered from the SSCA, but it is particularly significant as one of only a few MS66 examples certified by NGC and PCGS. After more than 130 years at the bottom of the ocean, this piece still appears nearly perfect. A loupe locates just a couple of tiny grazes. Captivating cartwheel luster radiates from the light yellow surfaces. This razor-sharp Premium Gem has outstanding eye appeal and would be an excellent acquisition for any collector.(Registry values: N7079)
