1857-S $20 MS66 NGC. This is an impressive Premium Gem with glistening luster illuminating a needle-sharp strike throughout the finely grained surfaces. Liberty's hair strands show bold definition and the obverse stars are individually sharp, Vibrant orange-gold color adds to the outstanding eye appeal.
     Before the recovery of the S.S. Central America treasure, the 1857-S double eagle was an extremely rare issue in any high grade. That all changed when a Mint State treasure-trove emerged from the "Ship of Gold" find. Today, counts confirm more than 6,500 examples of the 1857-S were rescued from that famous shipwreck -- with most of the survivors grading Mint State or About Uncirculated. Although the pedigree of this Premium Gem coin is undocumented, it is exceedingly likely that this MS66 coin is a survivor of the S.S. Central America shipwreck. The 1857-S is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coinsby Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. NGC Census: 33 in 66 (1 in 66+, 1 in 66★), 3 finer (3/26).
