    Description

Attractive Gem 1857-S Double Eagle, Ex: SS Central America

1857-S $20 Spiked Shield MS65 PCGS. SSCA 0773. Variety 20A. A beautiful representative of the popular Spiked Shield variety, named for a light die line that crosses the shield's left border. The reverse of this well struck Gem is essentially immaculate, and the obverse is also clean despite a few unimportant ticks on the upper left field. Vibrant cartwheel luster and light pumpkin-orange toning ensure the eye appeal. Despite the recent recovery of the S.S. Republic shipwreck, the S.S. Central America remains the most numismatically significant shipwreck find, chiefly due to its bounty of formerly uncollectible gold assay ingots. Certified in a gold insert PCGS holder.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 2696, Variety PCGS# 70000, Base PCGS# 8922)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
