1857-S Double Eagle, MS66
Spiked Shield Variety
Ex: S.S. Central America

1857-S $20 Spiked Shield, Variety 20A, MS66 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 4517. This sparkling Premium Gem was part of the early recovery efforts led by Tommy Thompson and remains housed in its original gold-foil PCGS holder. It is Variety 20a -- the plentiful Spiked Shield variety, with diagnostic die lines extending beyond the left shield border. Prior to the discovery of the S.S. Central America, all Type One twenties were rare in Mint State and the 1857-S was among the greatest rarities of the No Motto type. All of that has changed now, with 1857-S double eagles available to collectors through the Superb Gem grade. This high-luster coin is magnificently smooth with orange-gold surfaces that lack any meaningful marks. The coin is housed in its original gold foil PCGS holder and comes with a deluxe burgundy California Gold Marketing Group, LLC box and faux Ship of Gold book. The Certificate of Authenticity envelope is empty. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.(Registry values: P2)
