Description

Well Struck 1858-O Twenty Dollar, AU50

1858-O $20 AU50 PCGS. About Uncirculated is the finest grade that the 1858-O double eagle can be located as Mint State examples are extremely rare. While Douglas Winter in his 2006 New Orleans Mint reference indicates that the Uncirculated population increased with the discovery of five such pieces in the S.S. Republic treasure, PCGS and NGC have to date (2/10) certified a paltry three Mint State examples, none finer than MS62.
The yellow-gold surfaces of this AU specimen display a fair amount of luster in the recesses. The design elements exhibit an above-average strike, evidenced by strong detail in all obverse stars, the date, and the shield, areas often showing weakness. Distributed light marks are in concert with a coin having seen brief circulation.(Registry values: N2998)
