Description

Scarce 1858-O Twenty, AU55

1858-O $20 AU55 NGC. This example has the appearance of a blundered obverse die, but it is not the variety described by Breen with an extra 8 protruding from the lowest hair curl. Instead, a projection extends from a hair strand into the middle of the neck, and it has every appearance of being a bottom serif from a stray digit 1. Another stray projection extends into the field from the upper left curve of the first 8 in the date. Each individual collector will have to determine if this variety is worthy of a premium over the normal market value for this date.
The mintage of this issue was 35,250 coins, and it is similar in overall rarity to the 1857-O double eagle. Examples are readily available in VF and XF grades, but it is seldom seen any nicer. Only eight examples were located among bounty from the S.S. Republic, compared to 64 examples of the 1858-S double eagle. Both sides are highly lustrous with rich orange-gold color. The surfaces are mildly abraded with evidence of a minute obverse rim bruise at star 1. This example has a weak, but clearly visible mintmark. Some prooflike surface is still visible in the protected areas around the devices.
