Description

1858-O Twenty Dollar, AU58
Obtainable Key Early O-Mint Issue

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. The hits just keep on coming in this Platinum Night session, with the offering of another rare early O-mint double eagle to complement those already seen in this auction. The 1858-O twenties were struck to the extent of a meager 35,250 pieces, yet that total sounds generous compared to those of the megararities, the 1854-O and 1856-O, issues that are out of each of all but the most well-heeled collectors. This near-Mint State example of the 1858-O is at the high end of the survivors, NGC showing 23 submissions in this grade (including one AU58 ) with six finer, PCGS allowing for eight with one finer (11/13). A scattering of ticks and just a whiff of wear appear along with most of the original mint luster on this gloriously appealing light golden-yellow piece. A wispy die crack runs from the right reverse rim through the N in UNITED and to the left side of the escutcheon.

The most recent example of this issue in the same grade and service was lot 5327 in our Central States Platinum Night (Heritage, 4/2012), which brought $35,937.50.
