Description

1858-O Double Eagle, AU58
Scarce New Orleans Issue

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The growing number of collectors specializing in New Orleans gold get some relief from the extreme rarity of the mid-1850s issues with the later date double eagles, but only a little because those dates are rare, too. Just 35,250 pieces were struck of the 1858-O twenty, and only 150 to 200 examples survive in all grades. Unavailability of Mint State coins leaves collectors with only a few near-Mint coins to fill the empty slot in their sets.

This example has nice remaining luster and pleasing, medium-yellow color with orange accents at the margins. A number of small abrasions dot the fields on both sides. Remnants of prooflike flash surround the stars, legends, and central motifs. Census: 20 in 58 (1 in 58 ), 4 finer (6/14).
