Description

1858-O Double Eagle, AU58
Semiprooflike Fields
A Significant Southern Rarity This Fine

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 3. Ex: Duquesne. The 1858-O double eagle's mintage of 35,250 pieces was similar to that of the 1857-O (30,000 coins), but this issue is notably scarcer overall, particularly in high grade. About Uncirculated examples are rarely seen near the upper end of that range, and only a handful of Mint State coins are known -- five of which were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic. The Smithsonian Institution houses two examples of this date, the finer of which grades just AU53, per Garrett and Guth. Doug Winter recalls a small "hoard" of 1858-O twenties that was absorbed into the market in the mid-1990s, but the coins therein were almost exclusive in AU50 or lower grades.

This near-Mint representative is something special, and will be recognized as such by students of Southern gold. The strike is well-executed, and there is just trivial friction over the high points of the hair curls, accompanied by light chatter in the fields. Noticeable semiprooflike mirroring remains in the protected regions of the obverse and over much of the reverse, illuminating the pleasant straw-gold patina. Census: 23 in 58 (1 in 58 ), 7 finer (5/15).
