Description

1858-O Double Eagle, AU58
Scarce Southern No Motto Issue
Only Five or Six Coins Finer

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 3. Double eagle production at the New Orleans Mint saw a modest increase over the previous year in 1858, rising to a still-small total of 35,250 pieces. Doug Winter estimates 225 to 275 examples of the 1858-O survive. Most of these are in XF through mid-AU condition. Nearly Uncirculated representatives like this are scarce, and there are only five or six examples known in Mint State. Four die varieties are identified. This one features the date low and left, with the mintmark high and slightly left over the N in TWENTY. Both sides are razor-sharp, with full detail on the portrait and obverse stars. Deep orange and red-gold surfaces show trivial evidence of rub, and myriad marks are relatively minor in nature. This is a phenomenally appealing example of a scarce New Orleans No Motto twenty.(Registry values: N2998)
