Description

1858-O Twenty Dollar, AU58
Nearly Unobtainable in Mint State

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 4. The date is positioned low and left, as on Varieties 1 and 3, while the mintmark placement matches that of Variety 2. Type One New Orleans double eagles are all highly desirable, though some are far more available than others. The 1858-O ranks among the more obtainable issues, but it can hardly be considered available in this relatively high grade. In fact, representatives of this quality are conditionally rare, and only five or six Mint State survivors are known.

This near-Mint twenty would serve as a perfect alternative for those unable to contend for an extremely rare Uncirculated piece. Medium green-gold color and flashes of luster deliver above-average eye appeal. The strike is also better than expected for this notoriously poorly produced issue. Wispy marks are present throughout each side, but the only overt blemish occurs on Liberty's cheek. Census: 27 in 58 (1 in 58+, 2 in 58 ), 5 finer (11/16).(Registry values: N2998)
