Upper-End, Bright Prooflike Fields

1858-O $20 AU58 ★ NGC. Variety 4. The 1858-O double eagle is similar in overall and condition rarity to the 1857-O. The mintage was only 35,250 pieces and attrition seems to have taken a heavy toll on this pre-War New Orleans twenty. Only 225-275 pieces are known, and the survivors are heavily skewed toward the lower end of the grading spectrum. Only four to five dozen pieces are believed known today in AU grades with an estimated five to six pieces extant in Uncirculated. These Uncirculated coins have a bearing on this particular piece. Two of these Uncirculated coins were found in the salvage of the S.S. Republic, and interestingly both are designated Prooflike by NGC. Meaning they have surfaces that are identical to this piece. Here the reflectivity is undesignated, however; but it is nevertheless prominent with highly reflective fields on each side. Strike details are also uncommonly sharp on both sides. There are no obvious abrasions, just the fine signs of light handling one would expect from an AU58 coin. The Star designation is well-deserved with strong eye appeal throughout. Census: 30 in 58 (3 in 58+, 2 in 58 ★ ), 6 finer (9/17).
