Description

1858-O Double Eagle, AU58
A New Orleans Rarity

1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 4. At the AU58 level, the 1858-O double eagle is rare but not quite in the Condition Census. NGC and PCGS report a dozen Mint State coins, likely with some duplication, the finest of which is a lone MS63 piece at NGC (2/18). Almost all examples of this issue that we have handled graded XF to AU; only three Uncirculated coins have appeared in our auctions since 1993, indicating just how rare the 1858-O is in high grade.

Although only 35,250 coins were struck, two obverse dies and at least three reverse dies were used to create four different known combinations. Variations in date and mintmark placement are the key diagnostics. This Variety 4 coin has bright, semiprooflike fields with small abrasions scattered about. The strike is sharp on the obverse with the only area of weakness being on the reverse stars. Census: 28 in 58 (3 in 58+, 2 in 58 ), 10 finer (2/18).
