Description

Rare Mint State 1858-S Twenty Dollar

1858-S $20 MS61 NGC. The West Coast economy was simultaneously burgeoning and starving for gold coinage, in particular, at the time the San Francisco Mint struck this issue, four years after its inception. Even though 846,710 pieces were minted, most circulated to some degree; heavily abraded, low-grade survivors are typical. Mint State examples are very rare. This specimen boasts bright, shimmering fields on each side with intermingled frost. Numerous small- to medium-sized abrasions are scattered about each side over surfaces that are largely yellow-gold, with a tinge of reddish patina around the margins. The strike is uniformly sharp. NGC has seen 13 submissions at the MS61 level and only a single one finer (2/12).(Registry values: N4719)
