Description
Lustrous MS61 1858-S Twenty
1858-S $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. The 1858-S double eagle follows the pattern of many S-mint double eagle issues struck after the S.S. Central America left California for the last time. As outlined by Q. David Bowers in his A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, the issue "is readily available in circulated grades such as VF and EF, but is rare AU, especially if with good eye appeal. Mint State coins are rarities and mostly congregate at or near the MS-60 designation."This MS61 coin is decidedly appealing compared to most of its Mint State peers, thanks to bold yellow-orange luster, but both sides show prominent abrasions, including several on Liberty's cheek and a long line in the space between the U of UNITED and the nearby ribbon. Still, an important coin that will find an appreciative home with the right S-mint double eagle connoisseur. Population: 9 in 61, 1 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2699, PCGS# 8925, Greysheet# 9894)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
