Description
1859 Liberty Double Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage Type One Issue
1859 $20 AU50 NGC. The 1859 double eagle claims a small
mintage of only 43,597 pieces. There was little numismatic interest
in the issue when struck, as the few collectors who saved large
denomination gold coins preferred proof sets. 1859 was the first
year that double eagle proofs were struck for general public set
distribution. The circulation issue is elusive in all grades, and
NGC reports only eight Mint State examples (3/26). The attractive
AU50 displays vivid orange-gold surfaces that retain much of the
original mint luster. The lightly worn surfaces show only scattered
and grade-consistent marks.Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2018), lot 3230; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2019), lot 5895.(Registry values: N2998)
