Description

1859 Liberty Double Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage Type One Issue

1859 $20 AU50 NGC. The 1859 Type One Liberty double eagle claims a small Philadelphia mintage of 43,597 pieces. There was little numismatic interest in double eagles at the time, and the few collectors who did systematically collect large denomination gold coins preferred to update their collections by buying a gold proof set every year. Accordingly, few high-quality specimens were saved by contemporary collectors. Additionally, the 1859 has not been recovered in large numbers in modern shipwreck finds. The issue is elusive in all grades today.

The is an impressive AU example, with vivid orange-gold surfaces that show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. Both sides retain much of their original mint luster and the well-detailed design elements are lightly worn. The overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 23 in 50, 67 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N2998)
