Description

1859 Double Eagle, XF45
A Challenging Date in All Grades

1859 $20 XF45 NGC. Ex: Eureka Hoard. This attractive Choice XF example shows some wear on the coronet and hair curls, but the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain significant traces of original mint luster throughout both sides. The mintage was a small 43,597-piece production, from which in those days scarcely any twenty dollar gold pieces were saved by collectors. Shipwreck recoveries are nearly nonexistent for this Philadelphia date. The natural eye appeal of this piece is simply exceptional. NGC Census: 33 in 45, 99 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N1793)
