1859 Double Eagle, XF45
A Challenging Date in All Grades
1859 $20 XF45 NGC. Ex: Eureka Hoard. This attractive Choice
XF example shows some wear on the coronet and hair curls, but the
lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain significant traces of
original mint luster throughout both sides. The mintage was a small
43,597-piece production, from which in those days scarcely any
twenty dollar gold pieces were saved by collectors. Shipwreck
recoveries are nearly nonexistent for this Philadelphia date. The
natural eye appeal of this piece is simply exceptional. NGC Census:
