Description

1859-O Double Eagle, AU50
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr.

1859-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Variety 1. The 1859-O double eagle is the third or fourth rarest of the pieces produced in New Orleans, depending upon the source consulted. The 1854-O and 1856-O issues are the rarest, with some placing the 1855-O ahead of the 1859-O. Deep yellow-gold surfaces are present on this piece, an example of Variety 1, with a high date and the 1 centered between dentils. A second variety exists with a low date and the 1 centered over a dentil. Portions of the protected areas on the reverse reveal attractive orange-red color.
Ex: Miles Collection (Stack's 10/1968), lot 858; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 1733.
