Description

1859-O Double Eagle, AU53
Fourth-Rarest O-Mint Twenty

1859-O $20 AU53 NGC. In 1859 the New Orleans Mint coined 9,100 double eagles, and about 1% of those survive, about 75 to 85 coins according to Doug Winter. Among the survivors are less than two dozen pieces that grade AU50 or better, although combined NGC and PCGS population figures suggest a slightly higher total, but those figures include resubmissions.
Although an obvious mark is visible between stars 11 and 12, the surfaces are far finer than usually encountered. This piece has light yellow luster with excellent design definition and slightly reflective fields, especially in the protected areas. Census: 8 in 53, 26 finer (5/11).
