1859-O Double Eagle, VF35
Type One Branch Mint Rarity
1859-O $20 VF35 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1859-O is one of
several rare double eagles from the New Orleans Mint, with a
mintage of just 9,100 pieces. Only the more famously rare 1854-O,
1855-O, 1856-O, and 1879-O have lower mintages, and the 1859-O is
slightly rarer than the 1855-O in terms of surviving examples.
Fewer than 100 pieces are thought to survive. Most examples grade
in the XF to low AU conditions, giving this VF coin a leg up in
terms of value, which escalates quickly by grade level. Some prooflike surface and traces of orange color linger in the most-sheltered areas (particularly on the reverse), with myriad tiny marks and abrasions over medium-gold surfaces that are tempered by 25 points of wear. A small mark at the margin opposite the bust tip and an inconsequential rim nick near star 9 are noted, but they are easily accounted for by the grade. The 1859-O is seldom available in any condition, but especially so in Choice VF grade. Population: 3 in 35, 44 finer (7/19).
