Description
Bold 1859-S Twenty Dollar, AU53
1859-S $20 AU53 PCGS. A rare issue in Mint State; the San Francisco Mint was only five years old when these double eagles were struck, and most of them circulated widely despite the generous mintage of 636,445 coins. This AU53 example displays excellent eye appeal. The orange-gold surfaces are relatively smooth, although a single, tiny dark fleck appears on the obverse rim at 2:30. A couple of others appear on the reverse, but the bold strike and superior overall appeal more than compensate. Population: 31 in 53, 97 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269C, PCGS# 8928, GSID# 9896)
