Description

1860 Double Eagle, MS62
Scarce This Fine, Rare Finer

1860 $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Although plentiful in circulated condition, the 1860 double eagle has long been scarce in Mint State. In 1982, David Akers wrote: "Choice and gem mint state specimens are fairly rare but they are available from time to time. I have seen at least a half dozen Unc-65 or better examples." Grading has always been subjective, and many would argue that standards have become stricter since Akers published his Analysis of Auction Records on double eagles. Today, PCGS and NGC each list only two Gem examples of this issue and none finer. In fact, any coins grading finer than MS62 are major rarities.

This CAC-approved MS62 coin displays a sharp strike from unlapped dies. Frosty original mint luster yields warm wheat-gold color and shows only a few light grazes. Eye appeal surpasses expectations for the grade. Population: 13 in 62 (3 in 62+), 10 finer. CAC: 5 in 62, 3 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
