1860 Double Eagle, MS64
Elusive Condition Rarity
Tied for the Finest at NGC

1860 $20 MS64 NGC. CAC Although the mintage for the 1860 double eagles was a healthy 577,000-plus pieces, the issue is a conditional rarity, like so many early Liberty Head twenties from all mints. A considerable number were found aboard the S.S. Republic, which sank in 1865 in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Georgia, but most of those coins were in lower Mint State grades, with only a handful at the MS64 level or finer. The 1860 is rarely mentioned in discussions of important double eagles as it should be. Consider the holdings of the Smithsonian Institution that include just two 1860 double eagles, each grading just XF. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth report an average certified grade of AU53, and an average auction grade just below MS60.
Gorgeous, flowing cartwheel luster is the calling card of this near-Gem NGC-certified 1860 double eagle, a coin of near-impeccable preservation and extremely high eye appeal. The greenish-gold surfaces are well-frosted and virtually free of contact. Even under a loupe, only a pair of tiny ticks appear on Liberty's cheek, which are nonetheless quite inconsequential. The impressive strike is razor-sharp throughout both sides; we are tempted to call it full, save for perhaps a couple of strands of hair on the obverse, the deepest parts of the dies. NGC has seen only six submissions in this grade with but a single MS65 finer (3/14). This coin is not specifically provenanced to the S.S. Republic or any other shipwreck recovery, but in any case it is a coin of noteworthy quality. Census: 4 in 64, 0 finer (3/14).
