Description

1860-O Liberty Twenty, AU50
Above Average Eye Appeal

1860-O $20 AU50 NGC. Only about 85 to 95 examples survive from a mintage of 6,600 double eagles at New Orleans in 1860. Survivors are scarce in higher grades with less than two dozen in AU grades according to Winter. He notes that none exist in Mint State, as of publication of his second edition reference in 2006. Today, NGC has certified a single example in MS60 with a prooflike designation, the only such coin known.
This attractive AU example has light yellow surfaces with a tinge of violet toning along the obverse border. Both sides show considerable luster with traces of reflectivity in the protected areas. An attractive and highly important New Orleans double eagle. Census: 11 in 50, 33 finer (5/11).
