Description

1860-O Double Eagle, AU50
Rare Antebellum Issue

1860-O $20 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. Double eagles were struck at five facilities: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Collectors of the denomination soon learn that the New Orleans O mintmark is the most difficult to acquire. The facility struck the issue in each of its first twelve years, 1850 to 1861, and again in 1879. But most examples are dated 1850 to 1853. The 1860-O is among the rare issues. The production was only 6,000 pieces, with only about 100 survivors in all grades. Many have been scratched or cleaned, but the present kit is a problem-free AU example that shows glimpses of luster within design elements, especially on the reverse. We note a thin line above the E in AMERICA, but there are no other noticeable marks. An important opportunity for the advanced gold collector. Census: 13 in 50, 37 finer (3/23).(Registry values: N4719)
