Description
1860-S Type One Twenty, MS62
Important Condition Rarity
1860-S $20 MS62 NGC. Since opening in 1854, the San
Francisco Mint produced substantial quantities of double eagles
every year, and those coins entered circulation where they remained
long enough that the typical survivor of every date grades in the
VF to XF range. AU examples are scarce and Mint State pieces are
rare. The only exception to that rule is for the treasure years of
1857 and 1865.The satiny light yellow surfaces of this lovely double eagle show only a few inconsequential marks that are expected for the grade. The 1860-S is a major condition rarity, with a combined NGC and PCGS population of just 21 coins in MS62 and only two finer pieces. Census: 13 in 62, 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269F, PCGS# 8931, Greysheet# 9898)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
