Description

1860-S Double Eagle, MS62
In-Between Issue

1860-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1860-S double eagle was struck well after the S.S. Central America was lost, and five years before the wrecks of the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan. This "in-between" issue was not found in quantity among treasure coins from either of the 1865 disasters. While NGC reports 67 examples of this issue recovered from the S.S. Republic, only three of those achieved a Mint State grade, either MS60 or MS61. This is a rare issue in any Mint State grade with a combined total of only 62 such coins at PCGS and NGC, for all Mint State grades from MS60 to a high of MS64. Housed in an old green-label PCGS holder, this amazing piece is highly lustrous with frosty yellow-gold surfaces and attractive orange overtones. Population: 10 in 62, 2 finer (11/18).
