    Description

1861 $20 AU55 NGC. Elements of luster remain in the peripheral fields and the recesses of the portrait, while light wear keeps this No Motto type coin from a Mint State grade. Each side has light surface chatter and butter-gold color. Prior to the discovery of the S.S. Central America and its cache of 1856-S and 1857-S double eagles, the 1861 Philadelphia coin was the most plentiful Type One issue in high grade. It remains popular as a type coin.(Registry values: N991)
