Description

Well Defined 1861 Double Eagle, MS61

1861 $20 MS61 NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that "The large mintage (nearly 3 million pieces), the highest of any double eagle until 1904, makes the 1861 a common issue in most grades." Brassy-gold surfaces of this MS61 coin exhibit good luster and sharply defined design elements. Minor luster grazes scattered about help account for the grade.
