Description

Spectacularly Toned MS61 1861 Twenty

1861 $20 MS61 NGC. With the highest production figure of any double eagle until the 1904 (and 1904-S) issues, the 1861 is nonetheless available in Mint State grades for a price, up through the MS65 level--and PCGS has certified a single, incredible MS67 example! This example has much appeal and exuberant luster for the MS61 grade, with beautiful, mellow red-orange patina deepening to amber near the obverse rim. A couple of tinges of ice-blue appear around the stars, and the reverse has a similar palette. The abrasions on Liberty's cheek preclude a finer grade, but this is a spectacular coin nonetheless in aesthetic terms.
