    1861 Twenty Dollar, MS61
    Type One Double Eagle

1861 $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1861 double eagle was long the most available Type One issue in Mint State. However, since the salvage of several shipwrecks, especially the S.S. Central America, a few San Francisco issues such as the 1856-S and 1857-S are much more plentiful than they were decades ago. However, Mint State examples of those dates often carry a premium with their shipwreck pedigree. The 1861 remains a favorite for type collectors. This piece is well-struck and radiantly lustrous, showing bright yellow-gold mint luster. Moderate abrasions on Liberty's cheek limit the grade but are not overly bothersome.(Registry values: N2998)
