1861 $20 MS63 NGC....
Description
1861 Twenty Dollar, MS63
Ex: S.S. Republic
With Rosewood Presentation Box
1861 $20 MS63 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The Mint struck
just under 3 million double eagles in 1861 as the threat of Civil
War loomed heavy over the country. The supply of surviving pieces
from this series-high mintage was bolstered in 2003 with discovery
of the S.S. Republic wreckage, which was carrying hundreds
from the issue when it sank in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia
in 1865. Prairie-gold surfaces on this Select Uncirculated twenty
offer surfaces layered in satiny luster for a flashy cartwheel
effect. The bold strike produces sharp details throughout. This
coin is housed in its original NGC S.S. Republic holder and
comes with a large, well-made rosewood presentation box and Odyssey
Marine's mini book about the recovery efforts.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269G, PCGS# 8932, Greysheet# 9797)
