    Description

    1861 Double Eagle, MS63+
    Formerly the Most Common Date

1861 $20 MS63+ PCGS. CAC. There was a time when the 1861 was the common issue in the Type One Liberty double eagle series. Prior to discovery of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Central America treasures, nearly all dates in the series were Mint State rarities. Today, several S-Mint issues are more frequently encountered than the 1861. The 1861 currently ranks as the fourth highest population issue in MS63 or finer grades, according to the PCGS Population Report. The top three, in order, are 1857-S, 1865-S, and 1856-S. Only two of the 32 MS63 PCGS examples of the 1861 include the + designation. This lovely Select Mint State specimen has butter-yellow luster with hints of pink toning and minimal surface marks. The strike is bold and eye appeal is exceptional. Population: 2 in 63+, 15 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269G, PCGS# 8932)
