    1861 Double Eagle, MS63
    Type Collection Candidate

1861 $20 MS63 PCGS. Once-upon-a-time, the 1861 double eagle was considered the single common date for the Type One design. However, its status changed when the S.S. Central America and other treasures were discovered late in the 20th century. Today, the 1861 is still a plentiful issue, but the 1857-S is considered the common date of the series. With a mintage of just under 3 million coins, the 1861 had the ninth highest production of any double eagle issue from 1850 through 1933, and the third highest mintage of the Liberty Head design. This Select Mint State specimen has a few trivial marks with frosty yellow gold luster, bold design elements, and faint traces of light blue toning. Population: 32 in 63 (2 in 63+), 15 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269G, PCGS# 8932)
