Description

    1861 Twenty, MS65
    Rare, Sharp Strike

1861 $20 MS65 NGC. More than 2.9 million double eagles were struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 1861. Not even the high-mintage days of the gold rush saw such a large number of double eagles produced. Many of the 1861 twenties were sent abroad upon the onset of hostilities and used to pay overseas suppliers for imports. Many, too, were released into circulation for domestic use. Few were saved in pristine condition by collectors in the uncertain, early days of the war.

This Gem twenty somehow escaped most of the abrasions that riddle even Select examples of the date. The strike is bold and crisp, without the evidence of worn dies that result in soft edges and central weakness often seen. Brilliant, orange-gold color with reddish overtones resonates with mint luster over softly frosted surfaces. A few tiny flecks of grease struck into the coin are inconspicuous and do not detract from the strong eye appeal of this conditionally rare, Type One double eagle. Census: 6 in 65, 1 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269G, PCGS# 8932)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
