    Description

    Important AU58 1861-O Double Eagle

1861-O $20 AU58 NGC. The '61-O is a very scarce Type One issue that has a certain mystique lacking from other dates. Most of the mintage was struck either under the auspices of the State of Louisiana or the Confederacy. It is impossible to know with certainty which coins are which, but many people believe the coins that show weakness at the base of the date are the CSA pieces. Most surviving examples are VF or XF with AU pieces being very elusive. The strike is very good, and the ample luster is prooflike in nature. As expected, the surfaces are lightly abraded, although to a degree much less than are most early AU58 Double Eagles. On the reverse, there are a few minute planchet flaws near the S in STATES. Population: 6 in 58, 0 finer (1/02).
    Ex: Kreisberg-Schulman Sale (2/60), lot 2872, where it brought $380; Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/97), lot 1141, where it realized $30,800. (NGC ID# 269J, PCGS# 8934)

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
