1861-O Twenty Dollar Liberty, AU Details
Struck by Three Governments

1861-O $20 -- Reverse Repaired -- NGC Details. AU. Winter-1. The repair noted by NGC appears in the right reverse field beneath ERIC in AMERICA. Several pits dig into the field, and the surrounding area is smoothed. Elsewhere, the coin presents as a pleasing AU-level 1861-O. Ample reflectivity appears in the protected areas, the devices are well defined with little wear, and scattered surface chatter is not bothersome. The coin has an overall smooth orange-gold appearance the is quite pleasing on the obverse.

The 1861-O is not the rarest of the New Orleans twenties, but it is scarce in any grade. The total mintage was 17,741 coins, which was struck under the auspices of three different governing bodies: the U.S., the State of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. It is believed that Confederate-made coins show heavy cracks through the left obverse stars, which are not present on this piece; this is likely a U.S. or Louisiana coin.
