Description

    1861-O Twenty Dollar Gold, VF35
    Rare, Historic Issue

1861-O $20 VF35 NGC. Very little is 100% certain about this issue, other than mint records show 5,000 pieces were struck for the federal government, 9,750 pieces for the State of Louisiana, and 2,991 pieces for the Confederate States of America. The total of 17,741 coins was the final mintage of double eagles produced at the New Orleans mint prior to 1879. Collectors, of course, would like to know which coins were struck by whom -- especially, which coins were struck under the authority of the Confederate States of America.

Different theories abound based on the condition of the dies and whether the coin shows a strong date or a weak date. Weak dates outnumber strong dates perhaps 5 to 1 for the issue. Coupled with some examples showing a die crack from near star 2 to the chin, a possible correlation exists (according to research by Doug Winter). Again, nothing is certain.

This example displays a strong date despite 25 points of wear. No die crack, however, is visible. Smooth, honey-gold surfaces show only a few marks, with most abrasions softened by wear. Excellent detail remains for the grade. Perhaps only 200 to 250 or so examples survive in all grades.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 269J, PCGS# 8934)
