    Description

Historic 1861-O Twenty, XF, Issue Struck
    Under Three Different Authorities

1861-O $20 XF40 NGC. The 1861-O double eagle was struck under three different governing authorities: the United States, the State of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. It is impossible to state with certainty who struck which coins. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) estimate that fewer than 200 coins are known in all grades, most of which are Very Fine, Extremely Fine, or low-end About Uncirculated.
The brassy-gold surfaces of this XF example retain traces of luster in the protected areas. The design features reveal the typical softness in portions of Liberty's hair and in some of the obverse star centers. Distributed minute marks are less numerous and severe than typically encountered on surviving examples.
    Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 4143.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 269J, PCGS# 8934)
