    Description

    1861-O Double Eagle, XF45
Struck by the Union, State, and Confederacy

1861-O $20 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1861-O is the final double eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint prior to the Civil War, which caused the eventual closure of all three Southern branch mints. A single die variety is known for the 17,741-coin mintage. Only about 5,000 of these are thought to have been struck under federal authority. The bulk of the mintage is believed to have been produced the the State of Louisiana, and a small number of pieces were coined under the auspices of the Confederacy. As only a single die variety was used, it is impossible to reliably identify which distinct coins were struck under each authority.

The 1861-O is scarce in all grades and immensely popular due to the circumstances surrounding its production. Only about 135-165 pieces are extant in all grades. This Choice XF coin displays lightly abraded yellow-gold surfaces with hints of reflectivity in the protected regions. The strike is bold, and there is little wear. Housed in a green label holder.
