Description

1861-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Seldom Encountered Any Finer

1861-S $20 MS61 PCGS Secure. Shipwreck recoveries from the S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan added 143 coins to the number of surviving pieces, but most of those coins graded About Uncirculated. Mint State examples of the 1861-S remain rare. Scarcity of Uncirculated regular reverse coins is somewhat overlooked because of ready availability of circulated examples, and the regular reverse variants are not nearly as rare as the Paquet Reverse coins. Still, fewer than 60 Mint State regular reverse twenties are certified by both services combined and -- no doubt -- that number includes some duplication. Nearly all of the coins congregate at the low end of the Uncirculated range.

This MS61 example features a razor-sharp strike on both sides. A loupe reveals numerous small marks and abrasions (as one might expect for the grade), while mint luster is strong and rich-gold color provides considerable eye appeal. Scattered remnants of "mint grime" add to the natural appearance of this deeply frosted Type One double eagle. Population: 19 in 61, 8 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)
