1861-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS62+
CAC-Endorsed, Just Two Pieces Are Finer

1861-S $20 MS62+ PCGS. CAC. After a small production of Paquet Reverse double eagles early in the year, the San Francisco Mint went on to strike 768,000 Liberty twenties during the rest of 1861, using the old Longacre reverse. Like most S-mint double eagles, the 1861-S circulated heavily at the time of issue and few were preserved by contemporary collectors. The issue is available in abundant quantities in circulated condition, but high-grade coins are quite rare today, even factoring in the coins recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic.

The coin offered here is a Plus-graded MS62 specimen, with an unusually sharp strike for this issue, which is among the most weakly struck Type One S-mint twenties. The stars show complete radials and bold definition is evident on Liberty's hair. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked for the grade and the overall presentation is most appealing. CAC endorsement joins the PCGS Plus designation to signify the coin's high quality for the grade. Only two examples are graded finer at PCGS and none are finer at NGC. Population: 6 in 62 (2 in 62+), 2 finer. CAC: 4 in 62, 1 finer (4/17).(Registry values: N4719)
