Description

1861-S Double Eagle, MS62
Fantastic Color

1861-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1861 double eagle, thanks to a massive mintage of almost 3 million pieces, is available for a price in lower Mint State grades if not readily available. That issue's San Francisco counterpart, by contrast, is a clear condition rarity even at the MS62 level represented by this coin. Both sides offer broad cartwheel luster with no trace of wear, yellow-orange with generous sunset tones splashed across the obverse and parts of the reverse margins. As suggested by the grade, this piece shows wispy abrasions and a few deeper marks, including a reeding line at Liberty's cheek and a small dig to the right of the eagle. Even so, the all-around eye appeal is grand. Population: 4 in 62, 1 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269K, PCGS# 8935, Greysheet# 9900)
