1861-S $20 Paquet AU53 NGC. Liberty Head double eagles can
be collected in any number of ways: by date, by mintmark
(Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and
Denver), by type (Type One -- No Motto, Type Two, Type Three) and
even by production format (circulation strike or proof). Whichever
way one chooses to collect, there remains a certain standardization
from one issue to the next. The only exception in the entire series
is the Paquet Reverse twenty struck in 1861.The Paquet Reverse double eagles are distinctive, featuring tall letters unseen on any other Liberty double eagle issue. There are other minor differences, too, including the star arrangement, rays, and shield border. According to Doug Winter's doubleeaglebook.com:
"In 1860, Anthony C. Paquet, the mint's assistant engraver, produced a new reverse for the double eagle. It was characterized by tall lettering and a very narrow rim. By the earliest part of 1861, it was decided that this design would not wear well, due to the narrowness of the border. A telegraph was sent to the San Francisco mint ordering a return to the old style Longacre reverse. This telegraph appears to have taken a considerable amount of time to reach the mint and by the time it had, $385,000 worth of the new reverse 1861-S double eagles had been struck and released into circulation."
About 150 to 200 examples of the 1861-S Paquet double eagles survive from a mintage of 19,250 pieces. However, none are known in Mint State. This is a high-end representative for the type. Most star radials are clear and partial frost glows around the raised devices. Orange-gold surfaces exhibit a trace of friction and abrasions are plentiful, as expected of a circulated Western gold coin. Three or four marks on Liberty's profile should aid in future identification, but their presence here does not overly detract from the overall appeal and certainly not from the rarity of this important outlier in the Coronet double eagle series.
