    1861-S Paquet Twenty, AU Details
    Well Defined and Minimally Abraded

1861-S $20 Paquet -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Anthony Paquet's few designs for the Mint show a commonality with elongated top and bottom serifs of the letters. The Paquet-designed 1865 pattern quarter shows these same taller letters. Specifically, by lengthening the serifs on the E's this creates two nearly enclosed spaces divided by the middle serif. Letters that have two downward or upward strokes -- A, R, Q, M, D, U -- will alternate thick and thin strokes, as on M, A, U, or else have two thick strokes, as on D, Q, R. Exposed serifs, as on L and E, are exaggerated to make them as long as possible.
While the Paquet Reverse twenty dollar legends are different in execution, the overall style is unmistakably the same -- an arch, quasi-Gothic approach to font creation that adds to the appeal of these coins. The Paquet Reverse twenties made at the San Francisco Mint to the extent of 19,250 pieces all apparently slipped quietly into circulation, and the issue today is unknown in Mint State. The finest certified examples at NGC and PCGS are coins in the AU55-AU58 range.
The acquisition of a Paquet Reverse double eagle is a milestone accomplishment for most collectors. The present example is well detailed and shows remarkably few abrasions for a coin that has such a lowered rim. The surfaces are otherwise uniformly subdued in appearance, a result of cleaning. Each side has light yellow-rose patina.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269L, PCGS# 8936)
