Description

1862 Double Eagle, AU50
Elusive Civil War Issue

1862 $20 AU50 NGC. Orange-gold surfaces contain hints of steel-gray in the protected areas. A few minor marks below the chin and on the neck represent the only visible abrasions on the obverse, and the reverse contains an old nick left of the R in AMERICA. However, these are all mentioned solely for completeness.
The 1862 double eagle is an elusive Civil War-era issue. The mintages of all gold denominations took a nosedive in this year due to the suspension of specie payments at the end of 1861, brought on by the uncertainty caused by the prolonging of the Civil War. However, the double eagle's drop was lesser, as it was still needed for foreign transactions. As such, most examples are known in VF or XF grades, lower than the smaller gold denominations of this year.(Registry values: N2998)
