Description

1862 Philadelphia Twenty, AU53
Small Wartime Mintage
Only 92,133 Pieces Struck

1862 $20 AU53 NGC. The low 92,133-piece mintage places the 1862 issue among the rarest Type One double eagles in the series. It remains a considerable challenge to collectors regardless of grade. Many numismatists ignored circulation strikes in those days, but only 35 proofs were made and few individuals could collect twenty dollar gold, especially during the war. Consequently, the 1862 twenties are rare in all grades. and Any About Uncirculated example represents an opportunity not to be ignored. This AU53 coin shows scattered small marks and abrasions, but the orange-gold surfaces are brightly lustrous and the original sharp strike remains intact. NGC Census: 25 in 53, 38 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N2998)
