Rare 1862 Double Eagle, AU53

1862 $20 AU53 PCGS. This Civil War-era twenty is one of the scarcest Type 1 double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of just 92,098 pieces. Adding to its elusiveness, this issue was notably absent from all of the recently discovered shipwrecks save for the S.S. Republic, which had only nine examples. Delightful luster radiates beneath the yellow-gold patina that covers the surfaces of the present piece. Liberty's hair is a trifle soft, but the rest of the details are powerfully impressed. Myriad abrasions are typical for the grade, and none merit specific mention. A better example of this rare issue. Population: 8 in 53, 14 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N2998)
