Description

1862 Double Eagle, Lustrous AU58
A Scarce Type One P-Mint Issue

1862 $20 AU58 NGC. Fewer than 100,000 pieces were struck of the 1862 and it is one of the scarcest Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint. This is an especially lustrous example for a lightly circulated coin, and is sharply struck throughout. Attractive orange-gold color graces both sides. Numerous small abrasions are scattered about, along with a couple of specks of grease that were struck into the planchet at the time of manufacture, both around star 3. Census: 19 in 58 (1 in 58 ), 11 finer (11/13).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 7288.
